OnePoll was approached by Sentient Communications who were working with Electrolux to discover practices on general usage of appliances in the home. More specifically, they wanted to understand clothes washing habits in relation to laundry. 

For this project, OnePoll interviewed 14,000 adults in 14 different markets in January 2023. This multi-country piece of research included the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. 

We worked together to create a 33-question survey which covered topics such as energy saving, types and ages of appliances in the home, factors that influence purchase of appliances, microplastics and laundry behaviours. Once the survey was finalisedOnePoll had the survey translated in to 16 different languages, ensuring the translation remained compliant with MRS best practices, and there was no implicit bias added in translations. 

Some key findings from the merged results of all countries are outlined below:

  • 86% had made an effort in the past 12 months to reduce the amount of energy they used at home
  • 83% agree that the current energy crisis has made them think more about the energy they are using on appliances
  • Cost, energy efficiency and performance are the factors that influence respondents the most when choosing a major appliance
  • Almost half (48%) would be prepared to wash their clothes at 30 degrees or colder more often, if it meant their clothes lasted longer
  • 82% felt that microplastics pose a serious environmental issue; 78% felt that microplastics pose a serious health issue
  • 56% stated they/their household has changed the way they launder clothes in the past 12 months due to the rise in energy costs

OnePoll delivered data tables for each country as well as a merged report that summed up data from all countries. We included demographic splits on age, gender, region, marital status and child’s age (if they had children). The project was a success and meant Sentient Communications was able to provide Electrolux with the latest public opinions to inform their knowledge.
